Curriculum
Three one-semester courses in the SMEA Pathway must be taken in order: Marketing, Finance, and Entrepreneurship. When you complete Entrepreneurship, which is the capstone course, you become a pathway completer. Entrepreneurship in Action an application-based course that is not a requirement to complete the pathway; it's an optional independent study course
Enrollment into SMEA
There is no application process to join SMEA. As an “open academy” and CTE Pathway, we welcome all San Marcos students to join our program. To sign up, simply request placement in our Marketing 101/164 course for 9th or 10th grade. Keep an eye out for scheduling updates from the San Marcos Counseling Department each spring

Marketing (MKT 101/MKT164)
Grades: 9th or 10th
Prerequisites: None
The Introduction to Marketing/Online and Mobile Marketing course provides a comprehensive overview of the critical role of marketing in customer-driven marketplaces, blending traditional and digital strategies. It covers essential topics such as marketing research, customer-driven marketing, and effective marketing strategies for both profit and not-for-profit businesses. Students will explore the various elements of promotion, including advertising, while also delving into online marketing techniques. Key components include search engine optimization (SEO), paid placement ads, keyword identification, and mobile advertising campaigns.
Finance (FIN 100/FIN 101)
Grades: 10th or 11th
Prerequisites: MKT 101/164
The Personal Finance/Introduction To Finance And Banking course provides an introduction to personal financial planning and foundational finance concepts. Key topics include financial goal-setting, budgeting, consumer credit, taxes, insurance, investing, housing, retirement, and estate planning, with an emphasis on achieving both immediate needs and long-term goals. Additionally, the course covers money and economic activity, interest rates, securities, bank regulation, and loan management. Industry professionals will offer insights into commercial and real estate loans, cashier operations, and trusts, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of personal and professional finance.

Entrepreneurship (ENT 201/ENT 202)
Grades: 11th or 12th
Prerequisites: FIN 100/FIN 101
The Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Innovation/Entrepreneurship: Idea to Business Model course offers an overview of the vital role of entrepreneurs and the innovation process in the 21st-century global economy. Students will examine the foundations of entrepreneurship and creativity, utilizing an applied approach to explore the connections between creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Participants will analyze various business opportunities using business modeling tools to assess market potential, dedicating significant time to industry, market, competitor, and customer analysis.
Entrepreneurship in Action (OPTIONAL)
Grades: 12th
Prerequisites: ENT 201/202
Entrepreneurship in Action is an optional, application-based course that provides an opportunity for students to take their passion for business and put it into action outside of the classroom setting. Students will embark on a personalized learning experience that involves job-like experience. Students may choose to develop a business plan and bring it to market. Alternatively, students may pursue an internship. This unique course combines independent work with classroom sessions for support and reflection. Students must complete the Entrepreneurship pathway and apply to participate in this course.
Project-based Learning
SMEA courses center around projects which provide students with realistic experience in a variety of business skills.
College Coursework
The 3 required SMEA courses are dual-enrollment, meaning students will gain college credit from Santa Barbara City College upon completion.
